Transporting a bike in a bag or box
Bike bags and boxes protect a dismantled bike and keep its parts together. They are particularly useful for flights, but also make car, coach and train journeys easier to manage.
Soft bags are lighter and often easier to store. Reinforced and hard cases offer more impact resistance but may be heavier, larger and more expensive. Internal supports, wheel compartments and replaceable hardware can matter as much as the outer shell.

Flying with your bike
Airline requirements vary by route, aircraft and fare. Check whether a bicycle must be booked in advance, the maximum packed dimensions and weight, the permitted container type and how the bike must be prepared. Rules can change, so use the airline's instructions for the exact booking rather than relying on a previous trip.
Common preparation includes removing pedals, turning or removing the handlebars and taking out one or both wheels. Protect brake rotors, immobilise the rear derailleur where the case design requires it, use the correct axle spacers and prevent loose parts from moving. Do not assume an e-bike battery can travel with the bike: passenger-aircraft restrictions normally make this a separate and difficult issue.

Weigh and measure the packed case, photograph its condition, label it clearly and keep small tools within the rules for checked luggage.
At your destination
Inspect the case and bike promptly. Report transport damage to the carrier before leaving where their process requires it.
Choosing a car bike rack
Car racks range from single-bike carriers to family platforms, but the safe number of bikes depends on the exact carrier and vehicle. Bike count is only one part of the calculation: stay within the carrier's total load, its per-bike limit and the vehicle, roof or towbar limit.

Count weight as well as bikes
E-bikes are much heavier than many unassisted bikes, so a rack advertised for several bikes may safely carry fewer e-bikes. Use the lowest applicable limit, and remove batteries only where the bike and carrier manufacturers permit and recommend it.

Will the carrier fit the bike?
Check more than frame size. Wheelbase, tyre width, frame-tube shape, axle spacing, mudguards and the position of batteries or suspension parts can all affect fit. Carbon frames may need a carrier or adapter specifically approved by both manufacturers. Long-wheelbase, step-through, children's and cargo bikes often require special consideration.
Preparing bikes for car transport
Remove child seats, panniers, rack bags, baskets and other loose accessories before loading. Secure every wheel and frame contact exactly as instructed, prevent bikes touching one another, and place the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle where the carrier maker specifies this. After the first few miles, stop safely and recheck the installation.
A permanently fitted pannier rack can often stay on if it does not obstruct clamps, arms or wheel straps. Protect delicate finishes at approved contact points, and never add improvised straps or adapters that conflict with the carrier instructions.

Is it safe to hang a bike by its wheel?
It can be when the storage product is compatible with the wheel and bike weight and is installed correctly. Check rim depth, tyre width and any wheel-manufacturer restrictions.
Can I keep my bike covered outside?
A suitable outdoor cover helps protect against rain, dirt and sunlight, but ventilation, security and the storage location still matter. Dry the bike and cover regularly and avoid trapping moisture.
Do airlines accept soft bike bags?
Many do, but rules vary. Confirm the permitted container, size, weight, booking and packing requirements with the airline operating the flight.
Can a roof rack carry an e-bike?
Only when the roof, bars and carrier approve the total load and the bike is within the carrier's per-bike limit. Lifting a heavy e-bike safely is also an important practical consideration.
How many bikes can my car rack carry?
Use the stated bike count only after checking total carrier load, per-bike load, vehicle or towbar limits, bike spacing and dimensional compatibility. A rack may carry fewer heavy e-bikes than conventional bikes.
Should I remove an e-bike battery for transport?
Follow the bike and carrier manufacturers' instructions. Removing an approved removable battery may reduce lifting and carried weight, but the contacts and battery must then be protected and transported safely.
