Start with where the bike is going

The right solution depends on whether the bike is staying at home, travelling inside a vehicle, flying as luggage or being carried on the outside of a car.

At home

Choose a floor stand, freestanding rack or wall system to suit the space, bike weight and how often you ride.

Inside a car or train

A bike cover can protect upholstery and nearby luggage; a travel bag provides more structure and containment.

By air

Use a purpose-made bike bag or box and check the airline's current booking, size, weight and packing rules.

On a car

Match a boot-, roof- or towbar-mounted carrier to the exact vehicle, bike dimensions and total load.


Storing your bike at home

Good storage keeps the bike stable, protects it from knocks and makes it easy to use. Before choosing, measure the available floor and wall space and include the full handlebar width.

What to check

  • Bike weight, wheel size, tyre width and mudguard clearance
  • Whether the stand holds a wheel, axle or frame
  • How high the bike must be lifted
  • Clearance for handlebars, pedals and neighbouring bikes
  • The wall construction, fixings and stated load capacity

Floor stands, wall hooks or horizontal racks?

Floor stands

Easy to use and require no drilling. Check tyre compatibility and stability, particularly for heavy e-bikes.

Vertical hooks

Save floor space by holding a wheel against the wall. Check rim depth, tyre width, bike weight and fixing strength.

Horizontal racks

Support the frame on two arms. Ensure the contact points suit the frame shape, finish, cables and any carbon-fibre restrictions.

The fixing is part of the storage system. Use hardware suitable for the wall material and the full loaded weight. If the structure or fixing method is uncertain, seek appropriate installation advice.

Protecting a stored or transported bike

A cover can keep dust off an indoor bike, provide a barrier between a dirty bike and a car interior, or offer temporary weather protection outdoors. These jobs need different materials and features.

For outdoor use, look for weather resistance, secure hems or straps and useful ventilation. A cover slows weather exposure but does not replace secure, dry storage or a suitable bike lock.

Avoid trapped moisture

Let a wet bike and cover dry, and do not seal damp equipment away for long periods. Moisture held against metal parts can encourage corrosion.

Transporting a bike in a bag or box

Bike bags and boxes protect a dismantled bike and keep its parts together. They are particularly useful for flights, but also make car, coach and train journeys easier to manage.

Soft bags are lighter and often easier to store. Reinforced and hard cases offer more impact resistance but may be heavier, larger and more expensive. Internal supports, wheel compartments and replaceable hardware can matter as much as the outer shell.

Check your bike against the case

  • Frame size, wheel size and overall packed dimensions
  • Space for wide handlebars, long wheelbases and integrated cockpits
  • Axle standards and any frame or fork support adapters
  • How the wheels, rotors, derailleur and handlebars are protected
  • Empty case weight and the airline's total allowance

Flying with your bike

Airline requirements vary by route, aircraft and fare. Check whether a bicycle must be booked in advance, the maximum packed dimensions and weight, the permitted container type and how the bike must be prepared. Rules can change, so use the airline's instructions for the exact booking rather than relying on a previous trip.

Common preparation includes removing pedals, turning or removing the handlebars and taking out one or both wheels. Protect brake rotors, immobilise the rear derailleur where the case design requires it, use the correct axle spacers and prevent loose parts from moving. Do not assume an e-bike battery can travel with the bike: passenger-aircraft restrictions normally make this a separate and difficult issue.

Before check-in

Weigh and measure the packed case, photograph its condition, label it clearly and keep small tools within the rules for checked luggage.

At your destination

Inspect the case and bike promptly. Report transport damage to the carrier before leaving where their process requires it.

Transporting bike wheels

A wheel bag prevents dirty tyres and drivetrains from marking a car or other luggage and adds protection when wheels are removed for travel. Choose between single-wheel bags and double bags with an internal divider.

Match the bag to the wheel diameter, tyre volume and axle hardware. Deep-section rims and wide MTB tyres need more room than a conventional road wheel.

Protect the vulnerable parts

  • Use rotor protection and keep disc rotors from side loads
  • Shield the cassette from the opposite wheel and bag fabric
  • Secure or separately store quick-release skewers and axle adapters
  • Make sure the wheel is clean and dry before longer-term storage

Choosing a car bike rack

Car racks range from single-bike carriers to family platforms, but the safe number of bikes depends on the exact carrier and vehicle. Bike count is only one part of the calculation: stay within the carrier's total load, its per-bike limit and the vehicle, roof or towbar limit.

Boot-mounted racks commonly carry two or three conventional bikes. A roof carrier normally holds one bike, so more bikes require multiple carriers and sufficient roof-bar capacity. Towbar or hitch carriers range from compact one- or two-bike models to larger family platforms.

Count weight as well as bikes

E-bikes are much heavier than many unassisted bikes, so a rack advertised for several bikes may safely carry fewer e-bikes. Use the lowest applicable limit, and remove batteries only where the bike and carrier manufacturers permit and recommend it.

Strap-mounted rear carriers can be affordable, compact and easy to store. Fit is vehicle-specific and may be affected by spoilers, trim, glass tailgates and powered boot lids.

Roof carriers leave the boot accessible and each carrier usually holds one bike. They require compatible roof bars and enough capacity for the bars, carriers and bikes together.

  • Allow for lifting weight and vehicle height
  • Never enter height-restricted areas by habit

Towbar & Hitch Fit

Platform carriers are often easier to load and are commonly the practical choice for heavier bikes and e-bikes. The towbar, carrier and vehicle must all approve the complete load.

  • Check towbar nose weight and carrier limits
  • Check per-bike weight, wheelbase and tyre width
  • Confirm lighting and number-plate provision
  • Check boot access and carrier tilting clearance

Will the carrier fit the bike?

Check more than frame size. Wheelbase, tyre width, frame-tube shape, axle spacing, mudguards and the position of batteries or suspension parts can all affect fit. Carbon frames may need a carrier or adapter specifically approved by both manufacturers. Long-wheelbase, step-through, children's and cargo bikes often require special consideration.

Preparing bikes for car transport

Remove child seats, panniers, rack bags, baskets and other loose accessories before loading. Secure every wheel and frame contact exactly as instructed, prevent bikes touching one another, and place the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle where the carrier maker specifies this. After the first few miles, stop safely and recheck the installation.

A permanently fitted pannier rack can often stay on if it does not obstruct clamps, arms or wheel straps. Protect delicate finishes at approved contact points, and never add improvised straps or adapters that conflict with the carrier instructions.

  2. Every wall fixing is suitable for the structure and total load.
  3. The bike and cover are dry before longer-term storage.

FAQs

Is it safe to hang a bike by its wheel?

It can be when the storage product is compatible with the wheel and bike weight and is installed correctly. Check rim depth, tyre width and any wheel-manufacturer restrictions.

Can I keep my bike covered outside?

A suitable outdoor cover helps protect against rain, dirt and sunlight, but ventilation, security and the storage location still matter. Dry the bike and cover regularly and avoid trapping moisture.

Do airlines accept soft bike bags?

Many do, but rules vary. Confirm the permitted container, size, weight, booking and packing requirements with the airline operating the flight.

Can a roof rack carry an e-bike?

Only when the roof, bars and carrier approve the total load and the bike is within the carrier's per-bike limit. Lifting a heavy e-bike safely is also an important practical consideration.

How many bikes can my car rack carry?

Use the stated bike count only after checking total carrier load, per-bike load, vehicle or towbar limits, bike spacing and dimensional compatibility. A rack may carry fewer heavy e-bikes than conventional bikes.

Should I remove an e-bike battery for transport?

Follow the bike and carrier manufacturers' instructions. Removing an approved removable battery may reduce lifting and carried weight, but the contacts and battery must then be protected and transported safely.
