Strong, Dependable Bike Security

Bike D-locks, also known as U-locks, combine a hardened rigid shackle with a compact locking body. They are a popular choice for commuting and everyday parking because they can provide high security without the bulk of a heavy chain.

Why Choose a Bike D-Lock?

The rigid shape of a D-lock limits the space available for leverage tools when it fits closely around the bike and stand. Models are available across the Sold Secure ratings, including robust Gold and Diamond options for valuable bikes and higher-risk locations. A frame bracket can also make a D-lock straightforward to carry on regular journeys.

What to Look for in a D-Lock

  • Security rating: Match the exact lock's Sold Secure rating to your bike's value, parking environment and insurance requirements.
  • Shackle size: A compact lock leaves less working room for tools, while a longer or wider shackle can reach around larger stands and frames.
  • Locking design: Hardened shackles, secure cylinders and double-locking mechanisms can improve resistance to cutting, twisting and leverage.
  • Carrying system: Check that any supplied frame bracket fits your bike and holds the lock securely without interfering with pedalling or bottles.

Lock the frame to an immovable object and fill as much of the shackle as practical. A separate or supplied extension cable can help secure a second wheel, but it may not share the D-lock's rating. See our Bike Lock Buyer's Guide for complete locking advice.
