Wheel bags protect removed bike wheels during car, train and air travel, while keeping dirty tyres, cassettes and brake components away from clothing and other luggage. Choose a single-wheel bag or a double bag with separate protection for a complete wheelset.
Why Choose a Bike Wheel Bag?
Wheels are awkward to carry and contain vulnerable components that can be damaged by knocks or side loads. A padded wheel bag makes them easier to handle, reduces marking inside a vehicle and adds protection for rims, spokes, hubs, disc rotors and cassettes. It can also keep spare race or training wheels organised between rides.
What to Look for in Wheel Bags
- Wheel and tyre size: Confirm the supported wheel diameter and allow enough room for fitted tyres, especially wide mountain-bike tyres and deep-section road rims.
- Single or double capacity: A single bag is simple to handle, while a double bag should include a divider that prevents the wheels and components from contacting one another.
- Component protection: Look for suitable padding around the hubs and rims, plus dedicated protection or clearance for cassettes and disc-brake rotors.
Clean and dry the wheels before longer-term storage. Use rotor protection, prevent side pressure on brake discs and secure quick-release skewers, thru-axles and adapters so they cannot move inside the bag. When flying, check whether the wheel bags must sit inside the main bike case and include their weight in the complete luggage allowance.
