Take a young passenger along for everyday journeys and family adventures with a compatible child bike seat. Choose from rear rack-mounted seats, frame-mounted rear seats and top-tube-mounted options, including specialist systems designed for mountain biking.
Why Choose a Child Bike Seat?
A child seat keeps a young passenger close to the rider and can be a convenient alternative to a trailer for shorter trips. Rack-mounted seats suit bikes and cargo e-bikes with an approved rear carrier, while frame-mounted seats attach to a bracket on the seat tube and do not require a pannier rack. Top-tube-mounted seats position the child between the rider and handlebars, with different designs for younger passengers and MTB use.
What to Look for in a Child Bike Seat
- Child suitability: Follow the seat manufacturer's age, weight, height and developmental guidance, including the child's ability to sit securely where required.
- Bike compatibility: Check the frame, seat tube, rack standard, load rating and available clearance, including batteries, cables, suspension, wheels and mudguards.
- Rider fit and handling: Allow for safe mounting and dismounting, steering and pedalling clearance, and the effect of the passenger's weight on balance, braking and handling.
Frame-mounted child seats are also commonly described as seat-tube-mounted seats because their bracket attaches to the bike frame at the seat tube, never to the seatpost. A luggage-rated pannier rack is not automatically approved for carrying a child seat, so confirm the bike, rack and seat as a complete system.
