Bike covers help protect bicycles from dust, dirt and weather at home, and keep mud or chain marks away from car interiors and other luggage when you travel. Choose a cover designed for where and how it will be used, from lightweight indoor protection to more weather-resistant outdoor options.
Why Choose a Bike Cover?
A fitted cover creates a practical barrier between the bike and its surroundings. Indoors, it can keep dust off the drivetrain and stop a stored bike marking walls or nearby belongings. During car or train journeys, a cover contains dirt and protects adjacent luggage. Outdoors, an appropriate cover helps reduce exposure to rain, dirt and sunlight, although it does not replace secure, dry storage or a suitable bike lock.
What to Look for in a Bike Cover
- Size and coverage: Match the cover to the number and type of bikes, allowing for wide handlebars, baskets, racks and larger e-bike or mountain-bike frames.
- Material and ventilation: Choose the required level of water and abrasion resistance, with ventilation where needed to reduce condensation around a stored bike.
- Secure fit: Look for elasticated hems, adjustable straps and useful lock openings so the cover stays positioned without rubbing unnecessarily against the bike.
Let wet bikes and covers dry before longer-term storage to avoid trapping moisture. A cover intended for indoor storage or travel inside a vehicle may not be suitable for an exposed car rack, where airflow can cause flapping, damage or obstruction. Use a cover externally only when its manufacturer and the carrier instructions specifically permit it. For more advice, read our How to Store and Transport Your Bike guide.
