Find your rhythm. Keep your balance.

Bring a different feel to your indoor riding with cycling rollers. Both wheels turn on rotating drums while you balance the bike yourself, giving every session a focus on smooth pedalling and holding a steady line. Explore simple rollers for easy spins and technique work, models with adjustable resistance and interactive options for riding with a compatible training app.

Why Choose Rollers for Indoor Cycling?

Traditional rollers leave your bike free to move rather than securing it to a fixed trainer. Small changes in your steering and pedalling become noticeable, encouraging a relaxed upper body and a consistent rhythm. Both wheels stay fitted, which can appeal if you use the same bike indoors and outside and would prefer not to remove the rear wheel.

There is a learning curve, even for confident outdoor riders. Begin with short, easy sessions, follow the manufacturer's setup instructions and keep secure support within reach for getting on and off. If you want to concentrate on a screen or hard intervals without balancing, a fixed turbo trainer may suit you better.

What to Look for in Cycling Rollers

  • Bike fit: Check that the rollers adjust to your bike's wheelbase, the distance between the front and rear axles. Confirm the supported wheel sizes, tyre guidance and rider weight limit too. Road, gravel or mountain bike labels alone don't establish compatibility.
  • Resistance options: Basic rollers may provide enough load for steady spins and technique work. Manually adjustable resistance gives you more scope to vary the effort, while interactive rollers can change resistance through a compatible app. Choose around the sessions you want to do.
  • Space and storage: Compare dimensions in use and when folded, carrying weight and access for stepping on and off. Some designs include a step or a frame that moves fore and aft; check the individual model rather than assuming these features are standard.

App connectivity and automatic resistance are different features. Some rollers need an extra sensor to send riding data, and that doesn't turn them into an interactive trainer. Check the exact roller model, sensor requirements and support for your chosen app and device. Interactive rollers still require you to balance the bike.

Set up on a suitable level surface with clear space around you and effective cooling. Follow the recommended tyre pressure and roller positioning, and keep a pump handy for regular checks. A training mat protects the floor from sweat and can help reduce vibration, but tyre, drivetrain and fan noise still matter in a shared home. Our Home Training Guide explains how rollers compare with other indoor options.
