Bike lock extension cables add reach to an existing security setup. Loop one through a second wheel, helmet, saddle or other removable item before connecting it to your primary lock, helping protect more of the bike without carrying a second heavy lock.
Why Use a Bike Lock Extension Cable?
A primary D-lock may secure the frame and rear wheel but leave the front wheel exposed. An extension cable can pass through components beyond the reach of the main lock and is lightweight enough to carry on regular journeys. It provides an additional deterrent, but it is not normally a substitute for securing the frame to an immovable object with a strong primary lock.
What to Look for in an Extension Cable
- Length: Check that the cable reaches through the components you want to protect and back to the primary lock without excessive slack.
- Loop and lock compatibility: Confirm that the cable ends fit over or through your D-lock, chain, padlock or other locking mechanism.
- Cable construction: Compare diameter, protective coating and flexibility according to the balance of resistance, weight and storage you need.
- Intended role: Use an extension cable for supplementary component security rather than as the only protection for an unattended valuable bike.
