Quick, Convenient Wheel Security

Bike frame locks, sometimes called ring locks, are fixed to the bicycle and secure the rear wheel at the turn of a key. Commonly found on hybrid, urban and Dutch-style bikes, they provide a convenient way to prevent the bike from being ridden away during a brief stop.

Why Choose a Bike Frame Lock?

Because the lock stays attached to the bike, it is always ready to use and requires no separate carrying bracket. A frame lock is useful for quick, supervised stops and as an extra layer alongside a primary lock. On its own it immobilises the rear wheel but does not attach the bike to a fixed object, so it should not be relied on as the only protection for an unattended valuable bike.

What to Look for in a Frame Lock

  • Frame compatibility: Check for suitable mounting points or an approved fitting kit and confirm that the lock clears the tyre, mudguard and wheel.
  • Plug-in compatibility: Some models accept a compatible chain or cable, allowing the bike to be connected to a cycle stand or other fixed object.
  • Security rating: Check the rating of the exact frame lock and any plug-in accessory rather than assuming the complete setup shares one certification.
  • Key operation: Check whether the key remains captive while riding and consider the availability of replacement keys.

Pair a frame lock with a compatible plug-in chain or a separate D-lock or chain whenever the bike will be left unattended. For advice on securing the frame and both wheels, read our Bike Lock Buyer's Guide.
