Choose a bottle cage that holds your water securely and lets you reach it comfortably. From regular top-loading designs to side-loading cages for tighter frames, the right choice depends on your bike, your bottle and the space between them.
Why Choose the Right Bottle Cage?
Most conventional cycling bottles fit standard cages across brands and capacities. The cage supports the bottle at its base and grips its body, with a retaining lip or tab often engaging the bottle’s shaped indent. Some combinations hold more firmly or release more easily, so look for secure retention with a manageable pull.
What to Look for in Bottle Cages
- Mounting and clearance: check your frame’s bottle cage mounts and the space needed to remove your bottle. A larger-capacity bottle usually adds height rather than needing a wider cage.
- Loading direction: side-loading cages can help on compact frames, full-suspension mountain bikes and e-bikes where a shock or battery limits access. Check the loading side for your mounting position; a cage’s left/right access reverses between the down tube and seat tube.
- Material and retention: compare aluminium and composite designs for weight, flexibility and grip. Cage shape and its fit with your bottle matter alongside material, especially on rough tracks.
- Colour and finish: black, green, silver and white offer ways to match or contrast with your frame. Check the finishes available for the cage design that suits your bike.
Fidlock bottles and mounts use a dedicated connection system, while shaped aero bottles may need a matching holder. For help choosing between conventional cages, specialist systems and alternative mounting positions, read our bottles and cages buyer’s guide below.
