The right light changes with the ride. Flying through a dark forest needs a completely different setup from rolling home along well-lit streets.

Start with one simple question: do you need a light to see, to be seen, or both? Once you know the job, choosing the beam, brightness and battery becomes much easier.

Lights for mountain biking at night

Dark trails come alive under the right beam. You need to spot roots, rocks, drops and turns early enough to ride with confidence—not simply flood the woods with the biggest number on the box.

For technical riding, a two-light setup works best. A handlebar light spreads a stable pool across the trail, while a helmet light follows your eyes through turns and helps you pick out hidden features.

Around 1,500–3,000 combined lumens is a useful starting point. Beam shape and usable runtime matter just as much.

Handlebar light or helmet light?

Make the handlebar light your foundation. Its lower angle creates shadows behind obstacles, helping you read their shape and depth.

Add a helmet light to look through corners before the bars turn, see where you’re pointing your head and keep a useful backup close at hand. On demanding trails, the pair is more capable than either light alone.

What to look for in MTB lights

  • A broad, even beam with useful peripheral light
  • Enough runtime for the full ride, plus a reserve
  • Secure mounts that stay put on rough ground
  • Controls that work with gloves
  • A visible battery indicator and lower modes for climbs
  • A tether or secondary retention strap for a helmet light

Rider tip

More light isn’t always better. An overpowered beam can wash out your riding mates’ lights. Use the lowest mode that lets you read the trail comfortably, then save maximum power for fast or technical sections.

Lights for gravel and forest tracks

Gravel may be less technical than a rocky trail, but potholes, loose surfaces and branches still arrive quickly in the dark. Around 800–1,500 lumens is a useful starting range, with more reach needed as your speed rises.

Lights for roads and commuting

Unlit roads: see and be seen

On a dark country road, your front light has two jobs. It must show you the surface ahead and make your approach clear to everyone else.

Around 800–1,500 lumens suits many unlit-road rides. Choose a controlled beam with enough reach for your speed, then aim it onto the road—not into the eyes of approaching riders and drivers.

Mixed commuting

Moving between street-lit roads and darker lanes? A front light around 400–1,000 lumens gives you room to turn the output down in town and raise it when the street lights end.

Well-lit streets

When you can already see the road clearly, visibility matters more than raw power. A compact front light around 100–400 lumens, paired with a rear light, may be all you need.

Choosing a rear bike light

A rear light doesn’t illuminate the road. Its job is to make your presence, position and movement clear to traffic approaching from behind.

Brightness helps, but lens design, viewing angle and position are just as important. A good rear light remains visible from slightly off-centre—useful on bends and at junctions.

What to look for in a rear light

  • A secure mount that holds the correct angle
  • Steady and pulsing modes
  • A clear battery indicator
  • Weather resistance and useful real-world runtime
  • A daytime mode if you regularly ride in traffic

Check it before you roll

Fit your normal jacket and luggage, then stand behind the bike. A saddle bag, pannier, backpack or long jacket can hide a perfectly good light. If you carry luggage regularly, a rack-mounted light may give you a clearer position.

Help other road users see you

Lights are central to visibility, but the whole rider matters. Fluorescent and high-visibility colours can create useful contrast during daylight and poor weather. Reflective materials come into their own after dark, returning vehicle headlights towards the driver.

Reflective details on moving areas—such as your ankles, shoes or lower legs—can also help another road user recognise the movement of a cyclist.

Clothing and reflectives support your lights; they don’t replace them. Keep observing, position yourself clearly and never assume that being visible means you’ve been seen.

How to choose bike lights

Lumens are useful, but they’re only the beginning. These checks tell you more about how a light will feel on the ride.

Beam shape

A wide flood helps on twisting trails. A controlled road beam places useful light ahead while reducing glare.

Useful runtime

Check the runtime at the setting you’ll actually use. Leave a reserve for cold weather, delays and detours.

Mounting

A powerful beam is wasted if the mount slips. Look for a secure fit and make sure the light clears cables and luggage.

Battery feedback

A clear charge indicator lets you manage the ride. Automatic low-power modes can help you get home.

Weather resistance

Rain, spray and winter grit are part of real riding. Choose a light and charging-port cover built for the conditions.

Side visibility

Useful on city streets, roundabouts and junctions, where another road user may approach from an angle.

Steady, flashing or pulsing?

Use steady when you need to see

A consistent beam makes the road or trail easier to read and helps you judge distance, texture and movement.

Use pulse to attract attention

A pulse can help you stand out, but the brightest flash isn’t always the best choice—especially at night or in a group.

Consider one of each at the rear

The pulse catches attention, while the steady light gives others a consistent reference for your position and distance.

Bike-light rules in Great Britain

When cycling on a public road between sunset and sunrise, your bike must have a white front light, a red rear light, a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors on qualifying bicycles.

Flashing lights are permitted when they meet the relevant requirements. The Highway Code recommends a steady front light in areas without street lighting. Aim every light carefully so it doesn’t dazzle other road users.

A few quick answers before you choose your setup.

How many lumens do I need for mountain biking at night?

Around 1,500–3,000 combined lumens is a useful starting point for technical trails. A broad bar light paired with a helmet light usually works better than chasing one very bright, narrow beam.

Can I use a helmet light on its own?

It can help off road, but a bar light gives you a more stable beam and stronger shadows for reading obstacles. On public roads, don’t rely on a helmet light as the bike’s only legally required front light.

Should my rear light flash?

A pulse can attract attention, while a steady light can make your position easier to judge. If you run two rear lights, one of each is a useful setup. Avoid an aggressive flash when riding closely with others.

Is the highest lumen setting always best?

No. Maximum power shortens runtime, creates more heat and can dazzle others. Choose the lowest setting that lets you ride comfortably, then keep the higher modes in reserve.

How much spare runtime should I allow?

Leave enough capacity for delays, colder temperatures and an unexpected detour. A light whose claimed runtime only just matches your normal ride gives you very little margin.
