Why? It’s a powerful question that often leads to some of the most insightful stories that have shaped our human history and it’s the question we asked local riders here in South Wales. Since autumn last year we’ve been meeting bikers on the trails and pump tracks and asking them the simple question of why. This first series of Rise With Us seeks to unpack why rising to ride brings joy to people’s lives; it’s a personal yet inspiring decision to simply put foot to pedal and get outside. So, join us for a whistle stop tour of some inspiring stories of risers from across the South Wales corridor.
Ellie Gunnell

Introducing up and coming BMX queen, Ellie Gunnell. From Swansea, Ellie is the current U15’s BMX Freestyle National Champion. She won the title in July at the British Cycling event presented by Backyard Jam in Darwen. Ellie has only very recently started competing and has taken the Women’s BMX scene by storm! After acing her first season she is very much hooked and we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the coming years.
With an infectious grin, fearless energy and unmistakable pigtails, Ellie is always pushing her own limits with her newest goal being to nail a tail whip. Not only is Ellie surrounded by a good group of friends that motivate her to ride, she also has the most incredible family. Biking has very much been a part of her life from a young age as the whole family regularly take to the local trails and jump parks. Ellie’s Dad also rides BMX and her younger brother, Max is following in her footsteps and is often seen following her into ramps.
We asked Ellie what motivated her to rise and ride,
“I want to keep cycling because I want to keep progressing, learning new skills, and pushing myself to be better. I like the friends I’ve made here and I just want to keep doing it!”
